Giving is Receiving

Updated: 3 days ago

Through Reiki practice, let’s go beyond mere intellectual understanding and truly internalize the idea that “to give = to receive”!

The other day, as part of Reiki volunteer activities, we held sessions at a senior center.

At the Hong Kong branch, we actively create opportunities to practice Reiki—through volunteer work, and by offering Reiki sessions to groups and individuals who have never experienced Reiki before.

We joined with participants at the Sik Sik Yuen Senior Center, together with Reiki students who volunteered.

When Reiki students expressed their wish to participate in volunteer work, we gathered about ten students each time and went to the venue together.

Although the location is not very easy to access, the Reiki practitioners always come with excitement and anticipation for the activities ahead.

One of the elderly participants this time was 91 years old!

She looked much younger than her age. At first, she seemed quietly receptive to the session, but midway she began speaking energetically about herself. Her strong presence still lingers in my mind.

Some participants felt sleepy during the session, while others felt refreshed and energized—everyone responded differently.

We also held Reiki circles and took turns giving Reiki.

For us practitioners, these volunteer activities bring joy too. On the bus ride home, I love hearing everyone’s impressions—whether they felt sleepy, relaxed, accomplished, or simply had fun.

Since some participants knew nothing about Reiki, at the beginning of the session we explained what Reiki means and what Reiki therapy is.

Even if the elderly participants don’t go so far as to study Reiki themselves and practice it actively, sharing enjoyable time together—while at the same time easing the body and calming the mind—is deeply rewarding. I always hope that through Reiki, more people will feel healthier, smile more, and spend peaceful time with their families and friends.

Finally, I want to emphasize that creating opportunities like Reiki volunteer work is not easy.

Those who have the chance to practice Reiki on others right after learning it are truly fortunate. For example, if you can offer Reiki to your family or friends, please treasure and make use of that opportunity.

This volunteer activity would not have been possible without the help of Kirsty, one of my Reiki students who works at Sik Sik Yuen. I am also grateful for Master Fan’s guidance in Cantonese, and for the conversations other Reiki students had with the elderly participants. Thank you all for your cooperation!

With gratitude and Reiki.
