When you learn Usui Reiki, it’s natural to want to master the healing techniques. Anyone who studies it would feel that way.

For example, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and Chinese herbal medicine also help balance the body, mind, and energy. But what makes Usui Reiki unique?

Reiki therapy naturally promotes inner transformation and personal growth for those who practice it.

Sometimes, this process begins without the practitioner even realizing it.

When I first learned Usui Reiki therapy, my motivation was to try the healing practice and help others. I had no idea that the original Usui Reiki method from 100 years ago included elements of self-purification and personal development.

At first glance, learning Reiki seems to be about acquiring the skill of placing hands on the body—mainly on others—for healing. That’s the common image. But what kind of practices did the original Usui Reiki practitioners use to elevate their consciousness?

These deeper aspects are covered in the original Level 3 attunement course of Usui Reiki, and here are some key points:

• Reiki practice helps the practitioner let go of ego

• You learn the importance of understanding who you are and supporting your current self

• What happens externally is a reflection of your inner state

• Self-purification is central to Reiki

• There isn’t a specific “self-purification technique”—all Reiki techniques lead to it

• Understanding the principles of the universe

When I first started learning, I had no idea these elements were part of Usui Reiki.

Let’s keep in mind that deepening this aspect of practice is what truly enhances the quality of Usui Reiki healing.

Ultimately, even the experiences you don’t fully understand right now may hold opportunities for healing—and your own healing journey can naturally ripple out into the world.
